The Pros
-- The case. I love that that cases aren't really cases and that they aren't really easy to figure out. Is Reese just there to protect the good Dr. Tillman from becoming the next victim of the sleezoid rich rapist? Why no? Apparently he's there to stop her from becoming a killer! And it takes a lot more brain power to figure out where the plot is going in theses cases than half the cop dramas on the menu these days.
-- When Finch goes undercover. I just love seeing Finch get out of the Batcave and help out. In this case, going to the ER to switch pagers with Tillman and then he creepily controls the cameras.
-- Reese has a soul. And you can literally *see* it through Caviezel's eyes. He never has to speak above his normal soothing cadence but man, some of the things he can emote just punch you in the gut. Especially in those last scenes with Tilllman and then the rapist guy. Empathy and compassion to hard steel that's frankly kinda scary. Rock on, Jim. Rock on.
-- Det. Carter! Okay I really like this woman. Sure, she's a little obsessed with Reese, but it really makes me look forward to them finally meeting. Kind of a "Fugitive" air about them.
-- Reese can multitask. He can follow Tillman and discover he plan (BTW the 40lbs of lye in that lovely cottage was seriously freaky) to dealing with drug dealers after his little NYPD pet.
-- Speaking of pet, Fosco? is sorta despicable. But they showed a human side with his son, so, okay, I can empathize a little with him.
-- Reese's soul. Oh, yes, he likes to say he's lost it while talking to that rapist, and lets face it, the man is scary with a capital YIKES. But, we see that soul in him ever time he empathizes with a victim, like Tillman. So no matter how much damaged goods he is - and ladies and gentlemen, that man is broken - he hasn't been broken beyond all hope. And Caviezel plays so many facets of Reese in so little time between kick ass fight sequences.
The Cons
-- I would like to see a bit more banter between Reese and Finch. Just some levity to the characters and the mood because the seriousness gets oppressive.
-- Just how "bad ass" is Reese, anyway? How is it he seems to never be afraid that he can't get out of something? And are we so conditioned to not being worried for him when he's got 4 to 1 odds, does that make his character too good to be true? I think I'd like to see Reese in over his head and Finch has to figure out a way to save him.
-- Backstory - we need more of it. Glad to see what kind of damage Finch is walking around with, but he's still not giving Reese (and us) the reasons WHY he's doing this with the Machine. Also, we need more on Reese as well.
The Verdict: WOW. I love the personal angle of the rapist story line with Tillman's sister's suicide and the gut-punch emotion it brings out in Reese.
