The Red Carpet Downlow: Everything you wanted to know about Hawaii Five-0's Red Carpet
(Sunset that greeted me arriving in Waikiki)
FIRST READ MY POPSTAR ARTICLESo, at the last minute, exactly a month out from Hawaii Five-0's Sunset on the Beach premiere, I pitched an idea to my editor at Popstar.com. It consisted of thinly veiled groveling for the chance to come out and have a place on the red carpet in Waikiki and cover the Season 2 Premiere of the show that has become my baby over the past year.
When he said yes, and after I had a three alarm freakout, I prepared to fly 3,000 miles to O'ahu, laden with camera and laptop to capture the experience.

Preview: Red Carpet with a Noob!
(Fire Dancers on Red Carpet opening ceremonies)
Okay, so I promised the down low on all things red carpet related (what it was like, how hard it was to check in, the heat, the sand in my shoes, did I mention the heat?) And you shall get all the details, the squeeing, the fangirling of the pretty pretty cast mates. (And Holy God they were all insanely gorgeous).
And as soon as my article is posted on Popstar.com, I will impart whatever goodies I can here.
I did get one-on-one time with Masi Oka, Mark Dacascos, Daniel Dae Kim, Lauren German, Grace Park, Daniela Ruah (NCIS LA), Terry O'Quinn, and of course, Alex O'Loughlin. And yes, I died on the inside. managed to keep it together on the outside, though.
So STAY TUNED!

FRINGE: The Best thing No One's Watching
Why do SciFi shows always get a bum rap? They usually start out on a rocky, pot-hole laden road and if they're lucky, sometimes make it into cult history.
X-Files, arguably one of the most well-known scifi dramas ever didn't start out with great ratings. Now, I can't even count the number of shows who have had a holla back to Mulder and Scully at some point. Even the Original Star Trek limped along until finding immortality much later.
But I've noticed in this day and age, it seems to be much harder for shows that deal with the wonderfully weird to catch a break in the TV world. And those that I see during the fall premieres usually have some kind of hype along with them that say "going to be the next X-Files..." aimed at fans like me, who will come to see if the new show will indeed measure up to the classics.
Fringe was like that. And you know what? It's brilliant! But does it get the viewers? Not really.
This makes me wonder, are there really that few SciFi fans out there anymore? Sure, we have an entire channel dedicated to the oddball and off-the-wall [SyFy] where we can find reruns of the various Star Gates, X-Files and newer series like Eureka and Warehouse 13. And yes, it's probably easier for them to eke out an existence on a cable network. Those seeking a home on the Big Four (CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX) have a much harder road ahead of them.
True facts: not many SciFi shows live a long, happy life on the Big Four. Even some that are less scifi and more fantasy fun like Pushing Daisies (which, I miss terribly) can garner critical acclaim and yet, die fast and quiet from bleeding ratings.
To me, Fringe is the best thing since our beloved X-Files. The characters are strong, multifaceted and we were invested in them from the beginning. Anna Torv was a little stiff at first, but as the show progressed, her Olivia Dunham is probably one of the strongest female characters on TV today.
The ensemble cast of actors, such as the great John Noble, Joshua Jackson, Lance Reddick and Jasika Nicole come together in a fusion of great chemistry and portrayal. And it's a crying shame Noble hasn't received an Emmy for some of his performances (another snub at Scifi genre, methinks).
The story arcs are compelling to say the least. But they are also a problem for the show. Having complex ongoing story arcs does not make it easy for new viewers to enter a show and know what the hell is going on. Lost had this problem as well, and frankly it's what kept me from watching that show. If I have to go buy several seasons on DVD to catch up, it's an excluding factor for me.
Fringe will premiere it's 4th season this fall and frankly it was a minor miracle that it got the nod from FOX network. FOX does seem to love it's Fringies, but don't expect a lot of growth. After struggling in the Thursday night time-slot, Fringe was moved to Fridays last season, the "death slot." But our plucky little show persevered.
Will it continue to survive this season? After that cliffhanger in Season 3, one can only hope. So why aren't people tuning in? The subject matter? The complex story arcs and mythos? Who knows.
Bottom line, Fringe tells a great story for those who chose to listen. There is action, suspense, drama and romance wrapped around a juicy and sometimes graphic scifi center. How can you beat that?
In my TV lineup, Fringe's finales far exceeded the competition with the utter "Wow!" factor alone and if given the chance, I think it could wow us for seasons to come.
Season 4 airs Sept 23 on FOX.

Want to go to Hawaii Five-0's Sunset on the Beach? Here's How!
So you think you have to be a journalist to go to Hawaii Five-0's SOTB 2011 in September? Think again!
There are actually two ways to go.
One: You can win the Hawaii Five-0 Ultimate Fan contest (which expires today, I think) and get an all expense paid trip to Waikiki for the Season 2 Premiere of H50. You play a few trivia games, answer a few questions and for the truly brave at heart, upload some videos of yourself singing the H50 theme song.
Honestly, it was that video thing that got me. Oh, H50, I do love you...but not enough to strap on a coconut bra and a grass skirt and do the hula on webcam.
Two: Get in touch with AlohaBruce and the Hawaii-Aloha.com agents who can create for you a tailor-made trip to satisfy all your Hawaii Five-0 needs. Currently there is a SOTB package which included accommodations at the Park Shore Waikiki hotel - across the street from all the SOTB action, a luau, tweet up and much more!
In other news, I have a little over two weeks until I'm hanging out on Waikiki, and I am ridiculously excited. I almost want to start packing now. But then I remember I still have to work, deal with a child and a husband and just... ugh. A time machine... I needs it, yo.
I plan on surfing at least one or two mornings while there. Always wanted to surf, but the beach down here in my special Hell is dirty and still half destroyed from Hurricane Ike. Plus, we got no wave action to speak of...unless a hurricane is coming in. I used to body board (boogie board) a lot when I was a kid, back when I wasn't concerned with how filthy the water was.
Ah youth...you are missed.

*tap* Is this thing on?
So, another blog to talk about TV shows and other sundry topics of entertainment. I know... the world reels.
BUT! There is a reason to watch this space! I will be doing reviews and recaps of some favored shows including Hawaii Five-0, The Mentalist, Fringe and possibly some new ones like Person of Interest and Grimm!
Everything will be linked back to the site I work for Popstar.com.
But wait! There's more!
In September I will be representing Popstar at the Sunset on the Beach Season 2 Premiere of Hawaii Five-0 in Waikiki!
People want to know the nitty-gritty details that won't be in my article on Popstar should come here. Basically, it'll be everything you ever wanted to know about a complete NOOB going to an event like this as a journalist.
If I trip and fall over the velvet rope onto the red carpet and Alex O'Loughlin steps on me, you'll know about it here.
If (God forbid) some crazed fan strips and streaks the stage behind Exec. Producer Peter Lenkov, you'll know about it here. I truly and seriously hope that doesn't happen because...just... no, but hey I'll tell you about it.
Any and all travel advice and links to the people who know the island will be here along with some pictures not used in my official article. Right now, I'm just hoping I can juggle a digital recorder and a camera at the same time without catching an elbow to the face in the press line.
Any suggestions on photo opportunities?
(anything that doesn't include me tackling Alex O or Scott Caan because, yknow, I value my life)
STAY TUNED!
